This blog is being set aside for a while – I’m on a road trip and boyfriend and I have set up a whole new blog for it:

Flower Bulb Update

Remember that post I wrote about a month ago about giving out second-hand pots full of flower bulbs for christmas? Well, I just wanted to let you know that it worked out nicely – by the time Christmas rolled around the bulbs had grown nice tall green stalks, and now they’re blooming. This is one of the paperwhites that I kept for myself (there’s nothing wrong with giving yourself a little something for Christmas, right?).

Eating Pumpkins

Did you know? Pumpkins are edible! And they taste pretty good, to boot.

In order to make food out of pumpkins, you usually have to do a few things:

Pumpkin is The New Mocha

bath-and-body-works-pumpkin.jpg

Am I the only one around here who’s noticed that pumpkin is totally in this season? Bath and Body Works, Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts are all advertizing their fancy new pumpkin-flavored wares like it’s the hottest new thing. As if pumpkins haven’t been around since forever or something. (more…)

Free Rice

I just wanted to post a link to this site – http://www.freerice.com/index.php - it’s a super cool idea and a great way to get people interested in hunger issues without being a total downer.

Ew.

Yesterday, in a moment of weakness and hunger I did something kind of reprehensible.

I was at Washington DC’s Union Station, on my way back north after spending the afternoon at the Solar Decathlon (which was AWESOME – more about that later), and I missed my train and had to wait an hour for the next one and I was hungry and frustrated with myself for missing the train and basicly ended up sinking to my ultimate low – the #7 crispy chicken sandwich with a coke and a medium fries.

It was delicious.

But that’s beside the point. I probably could have walked to the other end of the train station and found some more wholesome – and ideally more sustainably-produced – food. But I didn’t, and now I have my conscience to pay for it. I would also like to issue a formal apology to my degestive system, which didn’t deserve this.

Veggie Medley

We’re experiencing our first real week of fall weather in New York, which to me signals an alarm to get to the farmers’ market. The last of the summer vegetables are selling out, and soon it will be a winter of breads, cheeses, meats, potatoes and maybe some greens if we’re lucky. In celebration of a summer of colorful food, and as a sort of “see you till next year”, I made a simple yet veg-tastic meal the other night.

It doesn’t look like much, and to be honest I’ve never really been a big fan of vegetable stir fry, but you really can’t go wrong when you’ve got fresh, local, heirloom ingredients to work with.

Start with some veggies. I used yellow tomatoes, red peppers, a perfectly purple eggplant, half a zucchini and a bunch of spinach. You can really put anything in there though (carrots, peas, beans, let your imagination run wild). The key to making the veggies work is cutting them up. Slice some, chop others – a variation in texture really helps people to pick out different flavors and boosts the overall quality and experience of the meal. (more…)

This is a blog

Hello reader! Welcome to my blog. I’m Gwen, a 26-year old Brooklyn resident and aspiring green American. This blog is my attempt to record and share what I learn about living sustainably and going green. Feel free to read along – you might learn a thing or two about green living, and you’re certain to hear about the mistakes that I make along the way.
