Extreme Makeover Goes Green (once)

I was pleasantly surprised last night when I saw an ad for the next episode of Extreme Makeover Home Edition, (a fine family program for cheese-loving do-it-yourselfers like me). And no, it wasn’t the spikiness of host Ty Pennington’s hairdo that got me riled up, but rather the announcement that the next episode is going to be totally green.

I have oft whined while watching this program because the building and demolition practicies employed on the show are largely unsustainable, usually generating large amounts of waste and leaving homeowners with huge houses that are both expensive and inefficient to heat and light (not to mention the requisite jacuzzi that embellishes each master bedroom).

The show usually manages to throw in and highlight one green item per episode, but I’ve always thought that given the show’s popularity, it probably has the leeway to go all-green-all-the-time, and in the meantime give Sears (the show’s sponsor) a nudge in a greener direction by highlighting the store’s green products.

The fact that they’re airing an entirely green episode (I question how green it really is – I’m sure I’ll have some qualms but let’s wait and see) is really exciting, and I hope that it does so well that they have more (all?) green episodes in the future. The show airs Sunday night at 10:00 (eastern) on ABC, so if you happen to catch it, let me know what you think…
